PLAY

I had posting problems the other night while trying to download this for Illo Fri's subject "Play". ....Too late for Illo Fri, and not the best drawing I've ever done, but it's been so long since I've added anything new, I'm afraid everyone has given up on me.
I played clarinet in high school band.A few years back, I dug out my old clarinet, drove an hour away to the nearest music store to buy a reed for it, and after returning home, found that I could still play the Marriage of Figaro from memory. Fast forward to a few days ago......I dug it out again to draw for this subject, but play it? No such luck......oh, I could still remember the fingerings, but it seems that in my "old age", I have absolutley no lung power to play. I managed a few hideous sounding squeaks. Let's face it, my clarinet playing days are over........however, I recently learned on one of those "do it yourself" decorating shows on TV, that a clarinet can be turned into a pretty nifty looking lamp.Maybe I'll give that a try...
On another note.......thanks to the few of you who haven't given up on me yet, and still check to see if I'm still here! I've just been really busy.My little blog is now one year old. I hope to get back on track, and post more regularly.
*I gave up on the lamp idea, and hung my clarinet on the wall;it made for a neato art piece.

Just so you know checking your blog is one of the first things that I do every morning. I am glad to see you posting again. I like the drawing and I'm betting that you can play that clarinet.

Hey... I'm at the dorm. I bought a phone card, but I can't get the minutes until I have another line to call with. Ummm, they don't have wireless internet on my floor yet.

I've been checking your blog almost daily, looking for something new. Glad it's finally here! Love the drawing AND the lamp idea...wonder if I could do something along those lines with Shelby's old flute? She got her learners permit yesterday...here come more gray hairs!!
Love you,
Dana

Why am I not surprised that BOTH of us took clarinet in school?!

Though, I was just in the 4th grade. I can still imagine the feel of soaking that reef in my mouth to soften it. I wasn't very good at it. I think I loved more, carrying that clarinet case around. The velvet inside was something I would often stroke with my fingers.. feeling the softness of it and also noticing how the colors would change if I stroke the velvet opposite of the way the fibers were.

Welcome back to the blog world. I missed you!
Great drawings as always!

I wondered where you were! I suppose there are times one gets entangled in real life ;)
The clarinet is actually the one instrument I picked myself at university and spent a good year playing with a formidable teacher. When I left town I never found back such a good teacher so I was discouraged from continuing. Only a few years later I had to sell it to pay for my rent. Sigh... I still have the accordeon left I was forced to learn as a child. Every now and then I take it out and play the bass side and feel really groovy. As much as I hated it as a child I love it now and wished I could play sad Russian folk songs on it.

Anyway, to cut a long story, I think your drawing captures excellently the brass parts on the shiny black wood. It makes me miss my clarinet. To turn it into a lamp sounds like a real cool idea!

Great triptych (sp?). My father-in-law is a clarinet player/teacher who still gets together with a couple of groups that play Big Band for paying gigs. My visits to all the usuals have been pretty hit-and-miss lately... the old time thing. Wonderful drawing.

p.s. i also love to read the comments your siblings leave for you; i do feel guilty about it, even though it's public, but i love to see how other people interact with their siblings (i have a great relationship with my brother, but an almost non-existent one with my sister). anyway, i find comfort in the relationships you have with your siblings. (hope i'm not freaking you out!)

You have such a beautiful graphite style. Just don't lose the lung power in your pencil. It's so nice to know that drawing, and painting is something we can carry with us the rest of our lives.

Hi Janet - I'm fine - I hope you are too - I've not being doing any art recently so nothing to put on an art blog! I expect I'll get back into the swing as the garden loses its attraction!
